The anesthesiologist (narcotic surgeon) is a medical specialist who provides anesthesia to patients who must undergo surgery or a painful, stressful examination, and to life-threatening patients who require emergency care. The anesthesiologist is concerned with vital functions such as respiration, circulation, consciousness, temperature regulation, electrolyte and hormone balance, and/or severe pain. These functions are controlled, monitored, supported, and taken over if necessary.
